HOMEMADE PIZZA

THICK OR THIN.

You can choose to make either a thick or thin crust pizza with this dough recipe! If you choose to make a thin crust, divide the dough into two after it rises for two pizzas. For one thick crust pizza, use all of the dough! Or you can simply use half the dough for a thin crust pizza & then save the other half in an airtight ziplock bag for the next day to make something else! Or more pizza! 🤪

INGREDIENTS.

FOR THE DOUGH:
  • ​1.5 cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp dry active yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3.5 cups flour

FOR THE SAUCE:
  • 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Oregano
  • Crushed red pepper
  • 1 pinch sugar
  • 5 fresh basil leaves, optional

FOR THE TOPPINGS:
  • ​Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Any other cheese you like to add
  • Toppings of your choice
  • Oregano
  • Crushed red pepper
  • Basil, for garnish

DIRECTIONS.

STEP 1: MAKE THE DOUGH.
  1. ​In the bowl of your stand mixer, whisk together the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit to proof for 5 minutes.
  2. Add in the salt, olive oil, and flour. With the dough hook, mix the dough on medium-low speed until the dough is smooth and rotating in a ball on the hook with the sides fairly clean.
  3. Pat down the dough just a little and cover with a clean towel. Put the dough in a warm place to rise for 10 minutes (e.g., the microwave).

STEP 2: MAKE THE SAUCE.
  1. ​In a saucepan on medium heat, sauté the diced onion and garlic in 2 tbsp olive oil until fragrant and translucent.
  2. Add the can of tomato sauce and spice with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, oregano, sugar, and basil. Mix well and put the heat on low.
  3. Taste the sauce to adjust any seasonings and cook on a low simmer for 5-10 minutes. When the sauce is done, let it cool for another 5 minutes before adding to pizza.

STEP 3: ROLL OUT THE PIZZA DOUGH.
  1. ​Sprinkle flour on a clean work space, your hands, and your rolling pin. Also sprinkle some flour on the dough itself. Then, set the dough on your work space and punch it out into a small circle.
  2. Using the rolling pin, roll out the pizza into a large, thin circle using a forward and backward motion — going in all directions. If you’re choosing to do a thick crust, do not roll it out so thin.
  3. Once you’ve achieved a nice circle, place the dough on a greased pizza pan. Cut any excess dough off by using a pizza cutter along the outside edge of the pan.
  4. Form a crust by rolling in the edges of the dough evenly. Then, using your hands, press down on the dough so that it sits nicely and evenly on the pan. Let the pizza set for another 10 minutes while you prepare your toppings.

STEP 4: MAKE YOUR PIZZA.
  1. ​Preheat the oven to 425°. Using a ladle, spoon sauce in the center of the pizza and use the back of the ladle to spread the sauce in a circular motion. Do this until you have the amount of sauce you prefer on your pizza.
  2. Time to get cheesy! Add all the mozzarella cheese in the world — the more the better. You can also add some Parmesan cheese with your mozzarella! It’s really yummy.
  3. Add any toppings you’d like, then season with a little oregano and crushed red pepper. Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  4. Garnish with basil, then let the pizza cool for about 10 minutes before cutting into it.
